French Baguettes

Made after a family trip to France, this painting holds the dream of those thrown-together lunches: a crusty baguette, cold meats, cheese and the pleasure of eating simply and well.
One of our sons is coeliac, so the familiar French loaf became something we noticed rather than shared. That absence found its way into the painting alongside a strong primary palette and thick, direct sections of oil paint.
Unlike my neon works, this French series uses very little dripping or transparency. The marks are more definite — a reflection of the direct, precise rhythm we encountered outside Biarritz.
